Why Refer to FlowLabs?

Specialized in Male Fertility

FlowLabs focuses exclusively on male fertility testing and is led by medical professionals whose ongoing research advances how male fertility is measured, understood, and treated.

Rigorous Testing

We use the most technologically advanced testing available, backed up by comprehensive quality standards, ISO 15189+ accreditation, and licensing. Our tests go beyond basic parameters and include factors that other commercial labs do not. For example, our semen analysis test evaluates morphology by default and we are the only commercial lab that tests for ASA.

Quick Results, Clear Reports

Our turnaround time affords you the time you need to choose the best course of treatment for your patients, and our reports are designed to be comprehensive, supporting clinical interpretation and next steps and helping you guide patient care.

Better Access to Care

With on-site appointments, drop-off options, and a mail-in semen analysis kit available across Canada, FlowLabs’ mission is to reduce geographic and logistical barriers to male fertility testing.

How to Refer to FlowLabs

For Standard Male Fertility Testing

Complete a requisition form (you can find the FlowLabs one here) and provide it to your patient. Patients can then register with us online, upload their requisition, and book an appointment through the patient portal.

For Mail-In Semen Analysis

Patients with a requisition from a clinician can register online and order a mail-in semen analysis kit. This option is meant to improve access for patients who live far from a FlowLabs location.

For DFI Testing

Fertility clinics who are interested in sending patient samples to FlowLabs for sperm DNA fragmentation testing can contact us at [email protected] to discuss and arrange sample collection.

Clinician Education & Collaboration

FlowLabs supports clinicians through education, research, and practical resources related to male fertility diagnostics.

Our Lunch & Learns feature case-based education and discussions around advanced testing, showcasing the collaboration between medical practitioners in optimizing fertility outcomes for patients. Interested in having us present to your clinic or team?

Once a sample arrives at the lab, results are typically sent to clinicians (and patients, if they have registered for MyChart) within the following timeframes:

  • Semen analysis and post-ejaculation urine (PEU) tests: 5–7 business days
  • DFI and aneuploidy tests: 3 weeks
  • Post-vasectomy tests: 10 business days
FlowLabs uses flow cytometry for DNA Fragmentation Index testing, supporting more accurate, reproducible, and consistent results compared with other testing approaches.

For semen analysis, samples must be delivered within a certain timeframe and kept within a specific temperature range, as temperature changes can impact test results and may cause a sample to be rejected.

For DFI and sperm aneuploidy testing, samples must meet certain volume and concentration criteria to be tested. For DFI testing, any sample with a concentration under 1M/mL must be rejected. Volume is dependent upon concentration. We are actively working on a new process for low concentration samples.
