Our Male Fertility Tests

We offer the following types of tests to evaluate sperm health and identify potential fertility issues.

Semen Analysis

A comprehensive test that evaluates count, motility (movement), morphology (shape and structure), vitality, presence of anti-sperm antibodies (ASA), and overall semen quality. This is typically the first step in male fertility testing. We now offer a mail-in option as well.

DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI)

An advanced test that examines sperm DNA integrity, helping identify issues that may not appear in a standard semen analysis. It is recommended for a more holistic picture of sperm health.

Post-Ejaculation Urinalysis

This test identifies retrograde ejaculation, a condition where sperm enters the bladder instead of exiting the body. This test is typically recommended when the volume of semen is very low or absent during ejaculation.

Post-Vasectomy

A follow-up semen test to confirm that no sperm remain in the semen after a vasectomy. This test is typically used to verify the success of the procedure before discontinuing other forms of contraception.

Sperm Aneuploidy

An advanced test that evaluates chromosomal abnormalities in sperm cells, which can impact fertilization and embryo development. It is often recommended in cases of recurrent pregnancy loss or when additional genetic insight is needed. FlowLabs is the only commercial lab that offers sperm aneuploidy testing in Ontario.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients start with a semen analysis, which provides a comprehensive overview of sperm health. Based on those results, your clinician may recommend additional testing, such as DNA fragmentation or chromosomal analysis (measured through a sperm aneuploidy test), for deeper insight.

The more proactive you are about male fertility testing, the sooner you’ll have a good picture of your reproductive health. Because the lifecycle of a sperm cell is 70 to 90 days, it takes around 3 months to impact sperm quality – so the earlier you get tested, the earlier you can get started with treatment or lifestyle changes if needed.

Most tests involve providing a semen sample, either at home or in a private lab setting. The sample is then analyzed to evaluate sperm health and function, and results are shared securely with you and your clinician.

Yes. A semen analysis is typically the starting point, as it evaluates key aspects of sperm health like count, motility (movement), and structure. It provides the baseline needed to determine whether further testing is required. To get a full picture of your sperm health, a DNA fragmentation test is often ordered at the same time.
Not necessarily, but it is often recommended. For example, DNA fragmentation testing is equally important as semen analysis for determining sperm health.

FlowLabs focuses exclusively on male fertility, using advanced methodologies and strict quality standards. This leads to more accurate results and clearer insights as compared to general lab testing.
